PSALMS 42 & 43 METER: LMD (88 88 D) SUGGESTED TUNE: HE LEADETH ME 1. As longs the deer for flowing streams, So longs my soul for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When shall I see the face of God? My tears have fed me night and day, While people say, "Where is your God?" As I pour out my soul in grief, These things come to my mind again: 2. How I went with the multitude And led them all up to God's house With shouts of joy and songs of praise, As we were keeping festival. Oh, why, my soul, are you cast down? Oh, why are you disquieted? I shall again praise God my help, And I shall place my hope in him. 3. My soul within me is crushed down, And therefore I remember you. Deep calls to deep when rapids roar, Your waves and billows o'er me go. By day God shows his constant love, At night his song is still with me, A prayer to God who gives me life. And yet I say to God, my rock: 4. "God, why have you forgotten me? Why do you let my foes oppress?" They taunt me, saying, "Where's your God?" I feel like I've a deadly wound. Oh, why, my soul, are you cast down? Oh, why are you disquieted? I shall again praise God my help, And I shall place my hope in him. 5. Lord, be my judge, defend my cause Against those who are without God; Save me from those who falsehoods tell And those who do not do what's just. You are my God, my refuge true; So why must I rejected be? Why do I have to go and mourn Because I am oppressed by foes? 6. Send out your light, send out your truth, Oh, let them always lead me on, That I may come unto your house And to the mountain where you dwell. Then to God's altar I will go, To God who gives exceeding joy; And I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God, I will praise you. 7. Oh, why, my soul, are you cast down? Oh, why are you disquieted? I shall again praise God my help, And I shall place my hope in him. Oh, why, my soul, are you cast down? Oh, why are you disquieted? I shall again praise God my help, And I shall place my hope in him. Stanzas 1-4 reprinted by permission of the publisher from Sing the Psalms! by Dale A. Schoening. Copyright 1988 Dale A. Schoening.
