PSALM 49:1-12
METER: 77 77 77
SUGGESTED TUNE: DIX
This is the meter for the hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth."
1. List-en, peo-ples ev-ery-where!
Pay at-ten-tion, all the world.
Pay heed, wheth-er low or high,
Rich and poor to-geth-er, too!
I speak wis-dom from my mouth,
Un-der-stand-ing from my heart.
2. Pro-verbs I will list-en to,
Solv-ing rid-dles to the lyre.
Why in trou-ble should I fear,
In the midst of sin-ful foes,
Peo-ple who trust in their wealth,
Brag-ging o-ver what they have?
3. No one can ran-som one-self,
Nor pay God back for their life.
It costs much to ran-som life--
One can nev-er pay e-nough,
If one seeks e-ter-ni-ty
And would nev-er see the grave.
4. Wise folk die, and so do fools,
Leav-ing all their wealth be-hind.
. In their graves they shall re-main,
Though they claimed lands for them-selves.
Hu-man pomp does not give life,
Like the an-i-mals we die.
