PSALM 49:1-12
METER:  77 77 77
SUGGESTED TUNE:  DIX
This is the meter for the hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth."

1.  Listen, peoples everywhere!
    Pay attention, all the world.
Pay heed, whether low or high,
    Rich and poor together, too!
I speak wisdom from my mouth,
    Understanding from my heart.
2.  Proverbs I will listen to,
    Solving riddles to the lyre.
Why in trouble should I fear,
In the midst of sinful foes,
People who trust in their wealth,
    Bragging over what they have?
3.  No one can ransom oneself,
Nor pay God back for their life.
It costs much to ransom life--
    One can never pay enough,
    If one seeks eternity
And would never see the grave.
4.  Wise folk die, and so do fools,
    Leaving all their wealth behind.
.  In their graves they shall remain,
Though they claimed lands for themselves.
Human pomp does not give life,
    Like the animals we die.
