METER:  CMD (88 88 D)
This is the meter of such hymns as "There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood" and "America the Beautiful."

1.  Why do the na-tions all con-spire,
    And peo-ples plot in vain?
    The rul-ers of the earth stand forth,
    And plans a-mongst them make
    A-gainst God and his Cho-sen One;
    To-geth-er they all say,
    "Let's break their fet-ters from our-selves,
    And cast a-way their chains."
2.  The one who sits in heav-en laughs;
    The Lord scoffs at their plans.
    Then he will speak to them in wrath
    And ter-ri-fy them all.
    God says, "I've set my cho-sen king
    On Zi'n, my ho-ly hill."
    I'll tell the e-dict God has made
    And what he said to me:
3.  "To-day I've giv-en birth to you,
    You are my cho-sen son.
    If you will ask, I'll give to you
    The na-tions for your own.
    All of the earth you shall pos-sess,
    Your her-i-tage they'll be.
    You'll break them with a rod of iron,
    Smash them like pots of clay."
4.  Now there-fore, rul-ers, you be wise;
    O kings, now be thus warned.
    Serve God the Lord with fear and awe,
    With trem-bling kiss his feet,
    Lest he be an-gry, and forth-with
    You per-ish in the way,
    Be-cause his an-ger ris-es fast.
    Blest all who trust in him.
