PSALM 116:1-2 (3-4), 12-19
METER:  CM (86 86)
SUGGESTED TUNE:  AMAZING GRACE
Other hymns of this meter include "O For a Thousand Tongues" and "O God, Our Help in Ages Past."
NOTE:  The United Methodist version of the Revised Common Lectionary for Holy Thursday includes verses 3-4 of this psalm.  This is why stanza 2 of this setting is marked with parentheses.

1.  I love the Lord, for he hears me;
    He list-ens when I pray.
    He has in-clined his ear to me,
    I'll call him all my life.
(2.  The snares of death en-com-passed me,
    Its hor-rors dogged my steps;
    Dis-tress and an-guish I did know.
    I cried, "Lord, save my life.")
3.  What shall I ren-der to the Lord
    For all his boun-teous gifts?
    I will lift up sal-va-tion's cup
    And call up-on his name.
4.  Be-fore his peo-ple I will pay
    My vows un-to the Lord,
    For pre-cious in the Lord's sight is
    The death of all his saints.
5.  I am your serv-ant, O my Lord;
    Your pre-cious hand-maid's child.
    You loosed my bonds; I'll call your name
    And give you thanks and praise.
6.  Before his peo-ple I will pay
    My vows un-to the Lord
    With-in the courts of Yah-weh's house
    In Zi-on.  Praise the Lord!
